Senior James Whitted caught two touchdown passes to lead Irvine to a 30-7 Sea View League victory over Woodbridge Friday night at Irvine High.
Whitted caught eight passes for 146 yards for the Vaqueros, who won the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy, which goes to the city champion.
Woodbridge (5-5, 0-4 in league) managed only 56 yards passing and 40 yards rushing.
Irvine (7-2-1, 3-1), which had already clinched a playoff berth, scored the opening touchdown on a trick play.
On the Vaqueros’ first play from scrimmage, quarterback Mike Ricci flipped the ball to Chris Sinner, who threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Whitted, putting Irvine ahead, 7-0.
“We started off with that play and we’ve been working on it all week,” Whitted said. “And it just worked perfectly. It was great.”
Irvine didn’t stop there though. The Vaqueros moved to a 12-0 lead on a two-yard touchdown run by Keith Short with 6:23 left in the first quarter. Irvine’s Jeff Patty then hauled in a pass from Ricci for the two-point conversion to give Irvine a 14-0 lead.
It became 17-0 on a 42-yard field goal by Jessob Reisbeck with 42 seconds left in the half.
The Vaqueros took a 24-0 lead when Ricci connected with Whitted on a 24-yard touchdown pass play with 8:28 left in the third quarter.
