Nick Ross ran for two touchdowns and kicked a 37-yard field goal as Sonora clinched a playoff berth with an 18-9 victory over Sunny Hills in a Freeway League game Friday at Buena Park High School.
Sonora (5-5, 3-2 in league) managed only 51 yards of offense in the first half and its defense surrendered 220 yards to Sunny Hills (2-8, 0-5), which led, 9-8, at the half.
Zach Tune scored on a six-yard run to give Sunny Hills an early 6-0 lead. But Raider quarterback Ross capitalized on a fumble recovery to score on a one-yard run, and a two-point conversion gave Sonora an 8-6 lead.
The Lancers marched right back down the field, and Corey Achay kicked a 23-yard field goal 12 seconds before halftime.
Brandon Shepard carried the bulk of the Lancer offense in the first half, rushing for 155 yards in 18 carries.
But Sonora played a completely different game in the second half. Ross led a no-huddle offense to near-perfection, and the Raider defense gave up only 65 yards.
Quarterback Ross scored on a seven-yard run to give Sonora a 15-9 lead early in the third quarter. He later added his field goal to account for the final score.
Sonora controlled the clock in the second half by handing the ball to Jerron Cannon. Cannon finished the game with 93 yards in 13 carries.
