State GOP Group Endorses Bauer

ONTARIO — Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer fended off a well-financed challenge by millionaire magazine publisher Steve Forbes on Sunday to win the endorsement of California’s major conservative grass-roots group.
Bauer, extolling his opposition to abortion and his ties to Ronald Reagan, won the endorsement of California Republican Assembly delegates.
Bauer said the formal endorsement of the 3,500-member CRA was affirmation that “I am the conservative alternative to [GOP front-runner] George Bush.”
Also Sunday, Forbes was the target of attack by a moderate GOP group.
The Republican Leadership Council said in Washington that it will broadcast television ads in Iowa and New Hampshire today warning that Forbes will damage Republican White House hopes if he attacks Bush in television ads, as he is expected to do.
The ad says, in part, “Someone needs to tell that Steve Forbes that if he doesn’t have anything nice to say--don’t say anything at all.”
