411 Call Fees

* Re “PUC Allows PacBell to Raise Fees on 411 Calls,” Nov. 19: Not only has PacBell been allowed to raise rates for 411 help (to say nothing of the outrageous charge for Los Angeles area phone books outside of one’s own area code) but for well over six months now those dialing 411 have been subjected to the following promo--”Local number rates unchanged. Now numbers outside your local area and nationwide are only 95 cents”--prior to getting the information one requires. Several information operators with whom I’ve spoken are just as annoyed by this as the irate customers. What gives? (I used four of my current five free calls to 411 to get this down pat.)

* I was always under the impression that the PUC meant Public Utilities Commission. Now I know it really means the Private Utilities Commission!
