Trojans Start Fresh With 59-47 Victory

PORTLAND, Ore. — Freshman guard Ayeshia Smith led the way with 11 points and seven assists as the USC women opened the season Tuesday night with a 59-47 victory over Portland.
USC trailed 7-2 early, but held Portland scoreless over the next 4:44. A 25-2 run gave USC a 27-9 lead.
The Pilots (2-1) opened the second half with an 8-2 run to pull within 37-28, but the Trojans built the lead back up and were never threatened.
Guard Erica Mashia and forward Danielle Golay added 10 points apiece for USC, which shot 46%. Forward Tashara Carter contributed nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
Portland was led by center Sarah Green’s 23 points and 14 rebounds.
Trisha Felts added 19 points, but the Pilots shot only 29%.
