Child-Care Funding OKd by Governor

Gov. Gray Davis has signed legislation to continue grants to local child-care resource groups to train providers and expand parents’ access to child care.
The California Child Care Initiative Project has been in effect 14 years and uses a ratio of one part public funds to two parts private money to increase quality child care.
The bill, signed Wednesday, protects the existing child-care initiative, which otherwise could expire in the future.
The state budget provides $250,000 to the project if $500,000 is raised from private enterprise, according to Janice Rocco, spokeswoman for Assemblywoman Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara), sponsor of the bill.
The money will be used for training and recruiting child-care providers and linking them with parents.
Since 1977 in Ventura County, 88 new child-care providers have been licensed, 372 child-care spaces created and 1,004 people trained, according to Rocco.
