Canoga Park, the only team in the Sunset Six League devoted to a passing attack, attempted only five passes in a 27-0 victory over Van Nuys on Friday.
Quarterback Mike Spangle, a senior third-year starter, has struggled, completing only 43% of his passes. So Coach Rudy Lugo decided to establish a running game against the Wolves.
Canoga Park (2-3) gained 255 yards on the ground, eclipsing the team rushing total in its first four games combined. Michael Burnes had 106 yards, Jesus Navarro added 75 in seven carries and Oscar Carpio had 69 yards and two touchdowns.
Spangle made the most of his infrequent throws. Both of his completions went for touchdowns--34 yards to Tony Olivera and 16 yards to Israel Perez.
