The Tustin Unified School District will vote Oct. 25 to implement a temporary transfer policy giving administrators more flexibility when disciplining students caught with drugs or alcohol.
The policy, based on one being used in the Newport Mesa Unified School District, requires students possessing or using drugs or alcohol to automatically transfer to another school for 90 days. The students are prohibited from participating in activities sponsored by or related to the school from which they were transferred.
The policy, however, allows for students to return to their home schools after 90 days, although they must file a petition with the district. Current policy does not allow for students to return to their home schools.
