Checklist: Taxing Matters
Things to do this weekend with your money:
Today: This is the last day to file your 1998 returns if you got extensions in April and August.
Saturday: While you’re thinking about taxes, make plans to use the rest of the money in your flexible spending account. These accounts, also known as 125(c)s or tax-saver accounts, allow you to put aside pretax money for medical and child-care expenses--but you forfeit any money that isn’t used by the end of the year.
Sunday: You still have time to make adjustments to cut your 1999 taxes. Get a rough estimate of your 1999 tax bill by using calculators available on the Web. The easiest to use is probably TurboTax’s Tax Estimator at https://www.turbotax.com. Others to try include Kiplinger TaxCut’s calculator at https://www.taxcut.com or Microsoft MoneyCentral’s version at https://www.moneycentral.com.
