The Orange County Transportation Authority is slated to make a decision in November to approve more than $1 million for a railroad under-crossing that links the east and west sections of the Vareda Bikeway.
City officials have proposed a $1.4-million under-crossing at the LOSSAN Rail Corridor by constructing a bridge to support the rail line.
The under-crossing is the final link of an off-road bikeway that starts at Doheny State Beach and ends near the east city limit of San Juan Capistrano at Avenida Siega and Calle Arroyo.
The path, which is used by pedestrians, bicyclists and horseback riders, was built in the 1970s as part of the Orange County Master Plan of Regional and Commuter Bikeways.
