She’s an Inspiration and a Somebody Now

I want to thank you from my heart for the wonderful article on Wendy Welt (“Personal Best,” Oct. 11).

I saw her picture smiling out at me, with her holding that rose, and I felt good. With the blur of the lights, it looked as if she and her boyfriend were dancing. The smile says everything about her. I marvel at her parents that they raised her without falling into the world of the “special ed” labels.

I have to confess that the only time I felt argumentative was . . . [a comment] about her being a “somebody someday.”

I’d like to say: No, you’ve got it wrong. Someday is now. She has achieved a level of being a true and decent human being the likes of which most of us will never grow to. She is a somebody now. What remains is to hope that her decency and self-acceptance continue to grow so that she can encourage other people to be somebodies someday too.
