Aftershocks from Saturday’s Hector Mine earthquake continued Tuesday, and by evening nearly 1,000 quakes had been recorded as a result of the magnitude 7.1 temblor.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the strongest aftershock of the day was a magnitude 4.6 at 5:20 a.m., 40 miles north of Joshua Tree and 5 miles southeast of the Hector epicenter on the Marine base at Twentynine Palms.
There also was a 4.1 temblor 32 miles north of Joshua Tree at 3:39 a.m., plus a dozen quakes in the magnitude 3 range by 5 p.m.
Scientists have said they expect aftershocks to continue for 10 years, at a slowly diminishing rate.
