Wondering where to go for dark, haunted mazes, monsters lurking in the shadows, mad surgeons, torture chambers and hands-on experiences with slimy guts? Here are some of Orange County’s Halloween-spirited sites--most geared toward older kids and adults.
Buena Park
* Knott’s Scary Farm & Halloween Haunt
The county’s largest Halloween extravaganza. Hosted by Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, and the Crypt Keeper from “Tales of the Crypt.” Two scare zones, 10 walk-through mazes and rides re-themed for Halloween. Recommended for ages 13 and older. No costumes allowed.

When: Today, 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.; Wednesday, 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.; Thursday, 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.; Friday, 7 p.m. to 2 a.m.; Saturday, 7 p.m. to 2 a.m.; Oct. 31, 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.

* Medieval Times Haunted Castle
Special Halloween addition to the two-hour dinner theater show. Includes a medieval torture chamber, haunted maze and dancing. Costumes welcome.

When: Show times are Monday through Thursday, 7 p.m.; Friday, 6:30 and 8:45 p.m.; Saturday, 6 and 8:15 p.m.; Sunday, 5 and 7:15 p.m.

* Irvine Youth Center

La Habra
* La Habra Children’s Museum
Spooky and fun, but not too scary. Geared toward ages 3 to 8. This year’s theme is “Primordial Ooze,” featuring dinosaurs and the prehistoric era.

Admission: 75 cents for children 2 and older.

Laguna Niguel
* Halloween House 1999
Sponsored by Laguna Niguel Recreation Department. Dark and scary, mostly for older kids and adults.
Where: 27752 El Lazo Road, behind Laguna Niguel City Hall
When: Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m. (recommended for ages 8 and older); Friday, 5 to 7 p.m. (recommended for ages 8 and older); Friday, 8 to 10:30 p.m. (extra-scary session recommended for ages 10 and older), Saturday, 5 to 7 p.m. (least-scary session recommended for ages 5 and older.) * The Block at Orange
Realm of Darkness Haunted House by Bloodline Productions. Super-scary haunt geared toward older kids and teens.
Where: 20 City Drive
When: 7 p.m. to midnight, nightly through Halloween.
Admission: $9 for ages 12 and older. $6 for children younger thanr 12. (Not recommended for children younger than 12 unless accompanied by adult.)
