* Re “Senate Votes Kill Campaign Finance Reform for Year,” Oct. 20:
We are most grateful to Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Russell D. Feingold (D-Wis.) for their bipartisan effort to ban unregulated soft money from national political campaigns. The Senate vote to ban, 53 to 47 in favor, was a high-water mark toward the 60 to 40 needed to cut off debate. We encourage future such efforts to make elections battlegrounds of ideas, not of dollar bills.

* As we approach the end of the century and millennium, we reflect on the best, worst, etc. in a variety of categories.
I nominate the Republican leadership of the U.S. Senate as the legislative body who least “gets it” in not only this century but this millennium.
