Defiant Members of Banned Sect Arrested

Chinese police detained dozens of members of the Falun Gong spiritual movement--some of them teenagers, some middle-aged--after they went to Tiananmen Square to protest in defiance of a government ban on the group. The low-key protest, which participants knew virtually assured their arrest, showed that a three-month government crackdown and campaign of vilification targeting the group’s leaders has yet to eradicate the once widely popular movement.
