GAME DAY / A Look at Today’s Key Matchups

HIGH SCHOOL

* WESTLAKE (6-1, 3-0) vs. MOORPARK (3-4, 3-1)

At Moorpark High, 7 p.m.

This looks more like a reunion than a Marmonte League game. Coaches Jim Benkert of Westlake and Tim Lins of Moorpark were assistants at Crespi 10 years ago. Defensive coordinator Troy Thomas and linebackers coach Chris Romero of Westlake were assistants under Lins when he was coach at Crespi. “It’s not going to be personal,” Benkert said. “It’s going to be Westlake-Moorpark.” A frightening thought for Moorpark. Westlake has outscored three league opponents, 129-17. Running back Julian Lambert of Westlake appears fully healed from an ankle injury. He rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-0 victory over Thousand Oaks last week. Moorpark’s best bet might be to throw the ball, although Dylan McLaughlin has cooled after a hot start. He has passed for 1,683 yards and eight touchdowns, with nine interceptions.

* ANTELOPE VALLEY (3-4, 2-0) vs. LITTLEROCK (5-2, 1-1)

At Littlerock, 7:30 p.m.

Littlerock needs a victory to stay in contention for a second consecutive Golden League title. Antelope Valley must win to set up a possible league championship game against Highland in Week 10. The Antelopes had dominated this rivalry, winning all six meetings, until Littlerock’s 24-0 victory last season. Antelope Valley has rebounded from an 0-4 start. Quarterback Demetre Booker has rushed for 557 yards and leads a triple-option offense that is averaging a league-best 296 yards per game. Jon Molock, who has 359 yards rushing, and Jermaine Norman, who has 357, have been his most reliable options. Linebacker Marcus Raines of Littlerock leads a defense that is allowing 262 yards per game, a league best. But the Lobos have sputtered in league play, taking a 9-8 victory over Quartz Hill and losing to Highland, 40-14, last week. The Lobos possess the league’s most explosive weapon, tailback Rodney Woods, who has rushed for 980 yards and 12 touchdowns. Woods, who was limited to fewer than 100 yards rushing for the first time last week, ran for 172 yards and two touchdowns against Antelope Valley last season.

* NOTRE DAME (6-1) vs. CHAMINADE (5-2)

At Chaminade, 7:30 p.m.

Scoring against Notre Dame isn’t easy. The Knights have recorded back-to-back shutouts and have allowed only 57 points this season. Defensive tackle Travis Johnson has 12 1/2 sacks and linebackers Mike Barron and Patrick Wade don’t allow running backs to break loose. Chaminade has won five consecutive games entering this Mission League opener, but the Eagles won’t have running back Darrell Mason, who injured his knee last week against Harvard-Westlake. Quarterback Jon Palacios will need to connect with receiver Eric Zdenek for the Eagles to move the ball. Notre Dame’s offensive line has been making steady improvement, opening holes for tailback Trevin Lund, who has 13 touchdowns. Defensive back-receiver Jimmy Sharp might return for the Knights after being sidelined because of an ankle injury.

* SYLMAR (5-2, 2-0) vs. KENNEDY (4-3, 1-1)

At Kennedy, 7 p.m.

Sylmar’s state-record league winning streak is at 69, but Kennedy is more concerned about simply being a factor in the Valley Mission League race. The Golden Cougars snapped a three-game losing streak with a 56-20 victory over Monroe last week. Ruben Zaragoza leads City Section passers in the region, having completed 151 of 240 for 1,895 yards and 19 touchdowns. Quarterback John Valdez of Sylmar throws less often but nearly as effectively. The junior transfer from L.A. Lutheran completed 18 of 21 passes in the last two games and boasts a 60% completion rate. The Spartans’ primary weapon is running back-kicker David Contreras, who has rushed for 1,119 yards and scored 115 points. Kennedy’s scoring threat is receiver James Norris, who has 14 touchdowns on receptions, rushes and returns. Sanders Trent, a possession receiver, leads the region with 55 catches. Running back Jerome Williams of Kennedy, who has rushed for 441 yards will return after missing one game because of a neck injury. In their most recent meetings, Sylmar defeated Kennedy, 16-14, in 1994 and the teams tied, 7-7, in 1993.

* EL CAMINO REAL (4-3, 1-1) vs. CLEVELAND (3-4, 1-1)

At Cleveland, 7 p.m.

The teams are of similar talent--Cleveland is 4-3 on the field, having forfeited a victory because of an ineligible player--and the winner will stay in the hunt for the West Valley League title. The Cavaliers have scored more than 60 points twice, including last week in a shocking 61-0 victory over Chatsworth. Running back James Bethea is a breakaway threat who has rushed for 1,160 yards and 18 touchdowns in 121 carries. Matthew Clark can’t be ignored either. He is averaging 13.9 yards in 23 carries and 17.1 yards in 15 receptions. Quarterbacks Eddie Whitaker of Cleveland and Jonathan Graham of El Camino Real are adept at passing and running. Graham’s twin, Justin, leads the Conquistadores with 711 yards rushing and 17 catches. El Camino Real, which has won three of four, has an experienced line, led by Eric Hultin, Shaheen Jahangard and Mark Munoz.
