From the numbers can be deceptive department: Calvin Bell of Simi Valley leads Southern Section receivers from the region with 49 catches for 588 yards.
It hasn’t helped the Pioneers, who are winless in seven games.
Part of the problem is that quarterback Ben Santiago, who has completed 111 of 229 passes for 1,512 yards and seven touchdowns, has had 13 passes intercepted.
A bigger problem is the Pioneers’ defense, which allows a whopping 409 yards a game.
Bell is averaging 12 yards per catch and has three touchdown receptions.
The second-leading Southern Section receiver in the region is Larry Viltz of Crespi, which has one victory in seven games.
Viltz has 47 receptions for 487 yards, which is half his team’s yardage through the air.
