World IN BRIEF / COLOMBIA : 50 Guerrillas Killed, Military Says

The military said its troops had ambushed a rebel convoy and killed at least 50 guerrillas, including two involved in the slaying of Americans. The army said it ambushed two trucks carrying leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia guerrillas after they attacked a police station in Casanare state. Reporters were shown 24 bodies. Among the dead were two FARC officers who had taken part in the February abduction of three American activists, who were slain the next month by another FARC unit, said Armed Services chief Gen. Fernando Tapias. The rebel group says a rogue leader killed the Americans without orders to do so. But U.S. officials and Colombian prosecutors suspect higher-ranking commanders.
