COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT / USC : Hackett Looks for Road Warriors

The Trojans’ next game isn’t until Sept. 18 against San Diego State, but it will start quite a roll the next four weeks--at Oregon, home against Oregon State, at Arizona and at Notre Dame.

“Our ability to manage a hostile environment four out of the first six games is going to be a huge key to this season,” Coach Paul Hackett said before the season.

USC’s injury-depleted cornerback corps was under the gun against Hawaii, especially after freshman Kevin Arbet injured his ankle on the first defensive play of the game.

But the Trojans managed just fine, not only because of the play of starting corners Antuan Simmons, who had five tackles and a sack, and Kris Richard, who had three tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. Less-experienced players who contributed included Eric Reese, freshman Troy Polamalu--who also plays linebacker and had four tackles and a sack--and Tanqueray Clark, who played despite spraining his ankle two days before the game.
