In another nonleague boys’ water polo game:
Newport Harbor 11, Long Beach Wilson 10 (sudden death)--Newport Harbor, the top-ranked team in the county, won after Brendan Hanson scored 1 minute 30 seconds into sudden death. Peter Belden and Ryan Cook each scored three goals for the Sailors (1-0).
Wilson (0-1), the defending Southern Section Division I champion, played without section player of the year Tony Azevedo, who is training with the U.S. national team.
In nonleague girls’ golf:
No. 1 University 123, No. 2 Villa Park 134--Angela Won shot one-over 37 at Rancho San Joaquin for University. The 18-hole match will be concluded today. Shelly Raworth shot 38 for Villa Park.
In nonleague girls’ tennis:
No. 6 Dana Hills 9, No. 2 Corona del Mar 9 (Dana Hills wins on games 86-77)--Catie Reams and Lauren Calton swept in doubles, 6-2, 7-6, 6-2, for host Dana Hills (4-0). Reams and Calton defeated Ashley Jacobson and Leslie Damion in a pivotal set, 7-6, winning the tiebreaker, 8-6.
Corona del Mar is 1-1.
No. 1 Newport Harbor 16, No. 8 University 2--Newport Harbor went 9-0 in doubles, including a sweep by Chelsea Godbey and Amanda Collopy, 6-2, 7-5, 6-1. Natalie Braverman and Audra Adams also swept in singles for the Sailors (1-0).
In nonleague girls’ volleyball:
No. 10 Calvary Chapel 3, No. 9 Corona del Mar 1--Kelly Overby had 25 kills and Christy Kimmel had 15 for host Calvary Chapel (1-0), which won 15-8, 12-15, 15-7, 15-9.
No. 7 Huntington Beach 3, Long Beach Wilson 2--Kelly Brockman had a career-high 30 kills for the host Oilers (2-1) who won, 8-15, 16-14, 11-15, 15-9, 15-13.
