Savanna’s Kenny Casteneda kicked a 23-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining to give the Rebels a come-from-behind victory at Glover Stadium.
Casteneda, a 5-foot-5, 155-pound senior, drilled what was the apparent game-winner from 28 yards with 18 seconds remaining. However, a Sonora offside penalty forced him to retry his attempt from 23 yards.
With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Savanna’s quarterback Brad Thompson guided the Rebels on a 10-play, 50-yard drive down to the Raiders 11-yard line.
Thompson completed six passes on the final drive, four to wide receiver Daniel Torres, to set the stage for Casteneda.
At halftime, Sonora (0-2) seemed to be on its way to a victory. Its swarming defense held Savanna to 33 total yards in the first half.
Sonora’s Josh Gonzalez gave the Raiders a 7-0 lead when he scored on a 28-yard run late in the first quarter.
Early in the third quarter, Sonora increased its lead to 14-0 when Nick Ross scored on a 29-yard run.
Savanna (1-1) running back Marcus Jimmerson scored on a three-yard touchdown run with 3:54 left in the third quarter to pull Savanna within seven, 14-7.
With four minutes remaining, Thompson connected on a 71-yard touchdown pass to Torres to make it 14-13.
Savanna went for the two-point conversion but Jimmerson was stopped short of the goal line.
