Princely Gesture

I read Steve Hochman’s article on Alanis Morissette and Tori Amos combating ticket scalping on their joint tour (Pop Eye, Aug. 29).
However, this is not the first time their tactic has been used. During the 1985-89 “Purple Rain” tour, tickets sold at a premium and any moneys received over face value were donated to a charity of Prince’s choice.
The key element in optimizing the success of this plan was not to reveal the number of tickets available, and not to release all tickets until the day of the show. This certainly had a further dampening effect on scalpers.
