Villa Park’s Marquis Colvin rushed for 209 yards in 27 carries and the Spartans’ defense forced six turnovers in a 24-6 victory over Trabuco Hills in a nonleague game Friday at Trabuco Hills High.
Villa Park (2-1) piled up 306 yards rushing and kept Trabuco Hills (1-2) out of the end zone.
Although Dan Tellez rushed for 94 yards in 17 carries for Trabuco Hills, the Mustangs couldn’t balance their attack. Quarterback John Baggerley struggled, completing four of 18 passes for 43 yards, with four interceptions.
“That’s our first win on this field,” Villa Park Coach Pat Mahoney said. “I’ll wait to look at the film to say for sure, but I think we won the physical battle with Trabuco Hills. That doesn’t happen often.”
Villa Park, a Southern Section Division VI school, beat Trabuco Hills, which plays in Division II, for the first time since 1994.
“A total team effort,” Mahoney said.
Colvin took the spotlight offensively, gaining 130 yards in 16 first-half carries. His longest run was 47 yards and he also scored on a 44-yard fourth-quarter run to boost a four-point lead into a 17-6 advantage with 7 minutes 32 seconds remaining.
Although Colvin fumbled twice, he also contributed an interception with 4:25 remaining in the game to set up the final score for the Spartans.
Following a 43-yard run by Anthony Santa Cruz, who also had an interception, Daniel Munoz scored on an 18-yard run to make it 24-6 with 1:51 remaining.
Bryan Arguello made two interceptions to lead Villa Park’s defense, and he seemed to be in the middle of everything.
Arguello caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from John Henry Jackson to give Villa Park a 7-0 first-quarter lead, and he kicked a 42-yard field goal in the second quarter. Arguello also ran 26 yards on a fake punt play to convert a fourth and six.
But he also muffed a fair catch of a punt late in the third quarter, and Trabuco Hills’ Rony Dawly recovered the loose ball at the Villa Park 15. It was one of four turnovers for Villa Park.
But the Spartans’ defense held and the Mustangs had to settle for Jay Arntson’s second field goal.
