Burbank High has hired 1994 graduate Vazghen Zaghiyan to coach the girls’ tennis team.
Zaghiyan, a senior at Cal State Northridge, replaces Clyde Richards, who resigned after last season because of health considerations.
Zaghiyan, 23, helped Burbank win a Southern Section Division III championship in 1993 and was the Bulldogs’ No. 1 player in 1994, when they lost to Brentwood in the Division III semifinals.
* Georgette Wright, a sophomore at Burbank last year, will not play for her high school team this season, choosing instead to concentrate on private lessons and the junior-tournament circuit.
Wright, the Bulldogs’ top player as a freshman, was expected to be among the favorites to win the Foothill League singles title.
She is ranked No. 17 in Southern California in the U.S. Tennis Assn.’s girls’ 16 division.
* Laurent Hatchwell of Studio City defeated Tod Turley of Oak Park, 6-1, 6-0, on Friday to advance to today’s semifinals of the men’s 35 division of the 20th annual Senior Tennis Championships at the Westlake Tennis and Swim Club.
No. 2-seeded Dave Austin of Camarillo defeated Scott Phillips of Thousand Oaks, 6-2, 6-4, and Tom Ashforth of Woodland Hills beat Robert Auger of La Crescenta, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, in the men’s 40 division quarterfinals. Second-seeded Andrew Stanley of Camarillo and Dana Bierman of Tarzana each won to advance to the men’s 45 semifinals.
BASEBALL
* The Lancaster Stealth won their inaugural California Fall League game Thursday night, defeating the Rancho Cucamonga Surfers, 11-1.
Rod Lindsey (Tigers) had two hits, two RBIs and three stolen bases. Stealth pitchers struck out 18, led by Kyle Lohse (Twins), who struck out eight in four innings.
