Bus Solutions

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is one step ahead of The Times in heeding the call for testing new ways of delivering Metro Bus service. In its Sept. 18 editorial (“Bus Solutions Are Needed Now”), The Times urged MTA to experiment with a rapid bus system used successfully in Curitiba, Brazil. In fact, MTA plans to launch a six-month rapid bus demonstration project on Ventura Boulevard in late May or early June next year. Special buses will operate between Lankershim and Topanga Canyon [boulevards]. They will operate more frequently, make fewer stops and be equipped with devices that extend green lights for the buses so they can save significant travel time for riders.
Next year MTA also will experiment with rapid buses on Eastside and Mid-City routes. If successful, the program will be expanded as part of a concerted bid to overhaul the Metro Bus system.
