Pets in Rentals

Regarding the essay by landlord Doug Delahook telling why he doesn’t allow dog owners in his apartment house (Voices, April 8), I am also an apartment house owner, and I have never had trouble with pets. In fact, I have come to see them as good sense, especially on the first floor, because they protect the tenant from intruders, which in turn protects the apartment house owner and manager from lawsuits.
Also, the problems he mentions are problems of the last century, because now we have flea eliminators which can be applied to the dog with just a few drops, spill-resistant carpets and carpet pads and day care and dog-walking services for dogs.
