Survivors of Dump Tragedy File Suit

Survivors of a Philippine garbage dump collapse that killed at least 218 people in a squatter community July 10 filed a $22-million class-action lawsuit accusing the local government and private waste contractors of negligence. Named in the suit are the Quezon City government; the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, which supervises garbage disposal; a garbage contractor; and two real estate companies that claim the property where the dump is. The suit alleges that the dump violates various laws and regulations.
