Thrifty Eco-Resort Opening in Bermuda

Bermuda visitors have a new alternative to the exclusive, often-pricey resorts in the island nation: an eco-resort on (and over) the water with “tent-cabins” renting from $135 per night.
Daniel’s Head Village, on a peninsula about 40 minutes from St. George’s airport, last week opened about 20 of its 101 rooms plus its beach cafe. It plans to open a restaurant and the rest of the rooms by Oct. 1, according to Mike Nelson, vice president of Destination Villages in Santa Barbara. He said the 3-year-old company is developing the 19-acre site in partnership with Excel Legacy Corp., a San Diego developer.
The 16-by-16-foot tent-cabins have floors made of recycled plastic and lumber, canvas-like acrylic walls and roof, large windows, a veranda and a bathroom. Seventeen of them are built atop a pier, each with an acrylic window in the floor to view marine life. There are several swimmable beaches on the site and a water sports center. Rates begin at $135 per night through Oct. 31, then drop slightly. Tel. (877) 418-1723.
