Riordan Dedicates Stretch of L.A. River Bike Path

LOS ANGELES — Riding through red tape as if he had won the Tour De France, Mayor Richard Riordan on Wednesday officially opened a new stretch of the Los Angeles River Bike Path in Atwater Village.
The $2.2-million segment runs 1.38 miles--from Fletcher Drive to Los Feliz Boulevard--along the west bank of the river and will eventually connect with Griffith Park. Construction of the segment began in April 1999.
“We are one step closer to making Los Angeles more accessible to bike-riding Angelenos,” said Riordan, an avid cyclist himself, who joined dozens of riders including the Pole-to-Pole 2000 international exploration team.
The path is expected to extend south from the San Fernando Valley and northeast Los Angeles into downtown.
Later phases of the bike path project will include an 800-foot bridge over Los Feliz Boulevard to connect the Griffith Park and Atwater Village segments and an extension from Fletcher Drive to Barcaly Street, north of Arroyo Seco.
Planners say the bike path will also be continued to the west, from Riverside Drive, into the San Fernando Valley.
