Park Service to Let ‘Stiltsville’ Stand

The group of aging houses propped on poles known as Stiltsville will be allowed to stand inside Biscayne National Park, but homeowners’ leases will not be renewed, National Park Service officials said. Stiltsville won’t be torn down Dec. 1, as feared by homeowners who have been fighting to preserve the seven structures built over the water a few miles south of Miami. But under the plan, the Park Service will not rebuild the homes if they are destroyed or severely damaged during a storm. Stiltsville dates to the 1920s and 1930s, when fishermen built shacks in the area.
