Olson’s Trial Delayed Until New Lawyer Hired

LOS ANGELES — The bomb-plot trial of former SLA associate Sara Jane Olson was delayed indefinitely Tuesday because of the departure of one of her lawyers.
Superior Court Judge James M. Ideman released defense attorney Stuart Hanlon from the case after the lawyer, a widower, said he couldn’t leave his sons alone during a six-month trial in Los Angeles. Hanlon is raising the boys in San Francisco.
The judge asked Olson if it was OK if Hanlon were dismissed from the case. “No, it’s not,” she responded, then added with a smile, “But I don’t have any choice.” With Hanlon’s departure, Ideman gave co-counsel Susan B. Jordan three weeks to find another lawyer. Jordan told the judge that she was having difficulty finding a replacement for such a long and complicated case because defense resources are limited.
Olson is accused of conspiring in 1975 to kill police officers by planting pipe bombs under squad cars.
