His team keeps on winning, and now Wayne Morgan finds himself in exclusive company.
Morgan’s Long Beach State team erased any hopes of a letdown Saturday night, jumping to a 10-point lead less than five minutes in and cruising past North Texas, 100-63, in a Big West Conference game before 2,269 at the Pyramid.
The victory was the 10th in a row for the 49ers, 12-3 overall and 4-0 in the Big West. It’s their longest winning streak since the 1973-74 season, when the team was coached by Lute Olson.
The victory also sent a message to the rest of the Big West two weeks into conference play--Long Beach State is focused.
The focus was a concern for Morgan with his team less than 48 hours removed from its biggest victory of the season, a 78-66 victory over Eastern Division power New Mexico State.
“Before the game I said the team seemed to be really calm,” Morgan said. “Either they didn’t have a lot of emotion, or they’re really like businessman and were ready to go to work.”
It was a businessman-like effort by the 49ers, who are 4-0 in conference for the first time since the 1976-77 season, when they were in to the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn.
Mate Milisa had 27 points and Ramel “Rock” Lloyd had a season-high 26 points for Long Beach.
North Texas is 4-11 and 2-2.
