Bomb Squad Detonation Turns Cash Into Confetti

LONG BEACH — The Police Department’s bomb squad detonated a suspicious-looking box Wednesday, but instead of destroying an explosive device, the team turned thousands of dollars in checks and cash into confetti.
Police said they discovered a shoebox-sized container with a clock taped to it outside a Bank of America branch near Spring Street and Palo Verde Avenue about 5:30 a.m. Bomb squad members removed the box and detonated it at a disposal site.
Officers said they were surprised when shreds of money and checks were blown into the air. The exact amount in currency and bank drafts has not been determined.
Officer Jana Blair, a police spokeswoman, said someone apparently set out the box sometime before dawn. Said said investigators are trying to determine where the cash and checks came from.
No arrests have been made.
