A 77-year-old man was slightly injured after he drove through a railroad crossing and skidded into a moving freight train Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
The man, whose name was not released, smashed his Honda Civic through a crossing gate at 165th Street East near Avenue T-8 around 2 p.m. and hit the front of the freight train, said California Highway Patrol Officer Karen Faciane.
The man told officers he didn’t see the gate down and tried to stop when he saw the train, Faciane said. It wasn’t clear how fast the train was traveling, authorities said.
The man said he hurt his arm but refused to go to the hospital. Train traffic was delayed for several hours until the crossing gate was repaired.
