City officials are applying for more than $19,000 from the state to persuade residents to recycle oil.

“It’s really a way to help the city meet the state requirement to reduce its trash and waste by 50% by the year 2000,” said Martin Pastucha, director of public works for the city.

The money is available through the California Oil Recycling Enhancement Act, which provides block grants to eligible cities for keeping used oil out of landfills and drains, city officials said.

To receive the grant, a city must have in place a used-oil collection program that includes a public education element and provides a state-certified oil collection center for every 100,000 residents.
