Lindros’ Future Is Up in the Air

From Associated Press

The future of Eric Lindros, who sustained his fourth concussion in five months and sixth in two years on Friday night, is in doubt. He might retire, but if he doesn’t, he becomes a restricted free agent on July 1.

The Philadelphia Flyers must make a qualifying offer of $8.5 million--equal to this year’s salary--to retain the rights to match another team’s offer or receive compensation if he moves.

General Manager Bob Clarke has said the team will make the qualifying offer. But that was before Lindros’ latest concussion. Clarke won’t comment on the matter now. It’s unlikely another team would sign him for $8.5 million.

At Montreal, grieving fans, some in tears and wearing Canadien jerseys, left cards and bouquets outside the home of Maurice Richard, mourning one of hockey’s greatest players. Several Montreal TV and radio stations switched to all-Richard programming immediately after his death Saturday night and continued the blanket coverage Sunday.

A state funeral will be in the ornate Notre Dame Basilica on Wednesday, the Canadiens said. The public can pay respects today and Tuesday, when Richard’s body will be in the chapel of the Molson Centre, home of the Canadiens.
