Learning Center to Open at Business Site

Oxnard College will open a new distance-learning center Thursday at Jafra Cosmetics International Inc. to assist company employees meet their educational goals.
Under the federally funded program, Career Power, employees at the Westlake Village-based company can prepare for a high school equivalency degree or enroll in English as a Second Language and college-level classes using software loaded at the work site.
Students complete assignments, study and get tutored during standard working hours, thereby avoiding the need for evening child-care, said Nancy Egelko, coordinator of the program at the Oxnard campus.
The new center at the cosmetics company is one of several the college has established around Ventura County as part of its participation in the program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Hispanic Assn. of Colleges and Universities.
An official opening ceremony is scheduled Friday at 2 p.m.
