Police Storm Prison as Rioting Worsens

Yugoslav police stormed a prison in Nis to try to contain a hunger strike-turned-riot as inmates burned cells and took to rooftops after chasing off guards. Police moved into the compound minutes after guards regrouped and fired tear gas. Inmates, alleging they had been beaten “like horses,” were demanding that their sentences be cut by 30% and that prison management be replaced. The unrest began when Serbs demanded to be included in a proposed amnesty for Kosovo Albanians.
