Pete Cassidy made a triumphant return to Cal State Northridge on Monday night, coaching the California Southwest All-Stars to an 80-78 exhibition victory over the Matadors, a team he coached from 1971 to 1996.
Kris Johnson, formerly of UCLA, made two free throws with 28.3 seconds to play to give the All-Stars a 77-75 lead. John Burrell of Northridge missed a potential game-tying basket from the lane with seven seconds to play.
Burrell led Northridge with 17 points. Brian Heinle had 15 and Markus Carr had 13.
Former Northridge guard Derrick Higgins led the All-Stars with 25 points.
