Lakewood Mayfair Takes Advantage of El Modena Turnovers

Lakewood Mayfair capitalized on fourth-quarter turnovers by El Modena to defeat the host Vanguards, 28-21, in the first round of the Southern Section Division VI football playoffs Saturday.
El Modena led, 21-7, in the third quarter and was still ahead, 21-14, with less than six minutes left in the game, before Mark Kennedy recovered an El Modena fumble at the Vanguard 13-yard line. Five plays later, Allen Kennett scored on a one-yard run to tie the score.
After El Modena fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Kennett scored again, this time on an 11-yard run, with 3:10 remaining.
El Modena had a chance to tie, moving the ball to the Mayfair 10, but Kevin Brown’s fourth-down pass to Jerard Rabb fell incomplete in the back of the end zone.
The Vanguards (8-3) led, 14-7, at halftime on Adam Lancisero’s one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and an eight-yard pass from Brown to Daniel Dixon in the final minute of the second quarter.
El Modena made it 21-7 midway through the third quarter on Brown’s 34-yard touchdown pass to Duane McCabe, who had four catches for 93 yards.
Mayfair (8-3) got back in the game when Jim Manley scored on a six-yard touchdown run, set up by a blocked punt by Kennett.
Mayfair scored first, late in the first quarter, after Manley shot through the left side of the line for a 59-yard gain. Five plays later, Kennett scored from one yard.
