City Council members voted to adopt the first reading of an ordinance that would prohibit self-service tobacco display racks. Mayor Bruce A. Broadwater had requested this action in an effort to prevent minors from buying tobacco products. The ordinance will need approval at a second reading before it becomes a law.
City officials decided to continue the issue about televising the public comments portion of the council meetings to Nov. 14. Councilman William Dalton had requested the issue be discussed.
There was no action taken on a closed-session item regarding a claim for $1 million brought against the city by a former resident who claimed a police officer assaulted her.
