In men’s water polo:

UC Irvine 9, UCLA 7 (OT)--Tony Grosso scored midway into overtime and Jeff Powers had a goal on a penalty shot with two seconds left in overtime to help fifth-ranked Irvine upset top-ranked UCLA in the season opener for both teams.

Powers had four goals in the game, Grosso had two and Dan Hipp made 13 saves for the host Anteaters.

UCLA’s Adam Wright scored with 18 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.
