1. NEBRASKA (2-0) beat No. 23 Notre Dame, 27-24 (OT). A fitting game between schools with storied traditions. Cornhuskers’ Eric Crouch wins Battle of the Running Quarterbacks with touchdowns of 72, 1 and 7 yards. Next: Iowa, Sept. 23

2. FLORIDA STATE (2-0) beat Georgia Tech, 26-21. With quarterback Joe Hamilton no longer around to torment the Seminoles, they didn’t figure to have this much trouble against the Yellowjackets. Next: North Carolina, Saturday

3. MICHIGAN (2-0) beat Rice, 38-7. Wolverines scored touchdowns on their first four possessions. “We had a good game plan, it just didn’t work,” said Rice Coach Ken Hatfield. Next: at No. 16 UCLA, Saturday

4. MIAMI (1-1) lost to Washington, 34-29. Nationally prominent teams such as the Hurricanes are quickly finding that this is not a kinder, gentler Pacific 10 this season. Next: at West Virginia, Sept. 23

5. WISCONSIN (2-0) beat Oregon, 27-23. Michael Bennett, the Big Ten sprint champion who gave up a spot on the U.S. Olympic track team, had more than a G’Dayne with 290 yards and two touchdowns in 28 carries. Next: Cincinnati, Saturday

6. TEXAS (1-0) beat Louisiana Lafayette, 52-10. With Longhorns down 10-0, Coach Mack Brown doesn’t compound a major mistake. Applewhite is brought into the game and passes for 315 yards and four touchdowns. Next: at Stanford, Saturday

7. KANSAS STATE (2-0) did not play. Wildcat Coach Bill Snyder must be looking for his team to have a ball next week, going against one of those non-conference “pile-it-on” opponents. Next: Ball State, Saturday

8. FLORIDA (2-0) beat Middle Tennessee, 55-0. Quarterback Jesse Palmer got the hook quicker than Carlos Perez as Coach Steve Spurrier pulled him with the Gators leading 21-0 in the first quarter. Next: at No. 12 Tennessee, Saturday

9. GEORGIA (1-1) lost to South Carolina, 21-10. The Bulldogs got cold-cocked at Columbia, S.C., as quarterback Quincy Carter managed to complete only 10 of 24 passes for 108 yards with five interceptions. Next: New Mexico State, Sept. 23

10. VIRGINIA TECH (2-0) beat East Carolina, 45-28. Michael Vick didn’t have much of a game (119 total yards, no touchdowns) but the Hokies still got their kicks--blocking two punts and disrupting another. Next: Rutgers, Saturday

11. USC (2-0) beat Colorado, 17-14. The Trojan defense, dominant against Penn State, had its hands full with the Buffaloes’ highly regarded freshman running back Marcus Houston, who ran for 150 yards. Next: San Jose State, Sept. 23

12. TENNESSEE (1-0) did not play. The Volunteers got a scare when quarterback Joey Mathews heard something “pop” in his knee at practice. Tennessee will hear more of that from Steve Spurrier this week. Next: No. 8 Florida, Saturday

13. ALABAMA (1-1) beat Vanderbilt, 28-10. Coach Mike DuBose goes to backup plan, with Tyler Watts replacing Andrew Zow at quarterback in fourth quarter and leading two touchdown drives. Next: No. 25 Southern Mississippi, Saturday

14. PURDUE (2-0) beat Kent, 45-10. Drew Brees completes 32 of 46 passes for 415 yards and two touchdowns, and shows a different dimension in running for two short touchdowns. Next: at No. 23 Notre Dame, Saturday

15. WASHINGTON (2-0) beat Miami, 34-29. The Huskies, who ended the Hurricanes’ home win streak at 58 games in first meeting between schools in 1994, weren’t very hospitable in Miami’s first visit to Husky Stadium. Next: at Colorado, Saturday

16. UCLA (2-0) beat Fresno State, 24-21. The Bruins, after one of their best season-opening efforts against Alabama last week, appeared to be sleepwalking most of time against the Bulldogs. Next: No. 3 Michigan, Saturday

17. CLEMSON (2-0) beat Missouri, 62-9. The Tigers showed Missouri--and the rest of the college football establishment--that they’re back under Coach Tommy Bowden with their highest-scoring game in 19 years. Next: Wake Forest, Saturday

18. OHIO STATE (2-0) beat Arizona, 27-17. Quarterback Steve Bellisari passes for two touchdowns as the Buckeyes overcome Ortege Jenkins and a 17-10 halftime deficit in the desert. Next: Miami (Ohio), Saturday

19. MISSISSIPPI (1-1) lost to Auburn, 35-27. Rebel fans made it as difficult as they could for former coach Tommy Tuberville, but the Tigers rose above it all--and even hoisted Tuberville on their shoulders in triumph. Next: at Vanderbilt, Saturday

20. OKLAHOMA (2-0) beat Arkansas State, 45-7. Josh Heupel ties Cale Gundy’s school record for career touchdown passes (35). It took Gundy 40 games to reach the total, Heupel only 13. Next: Rice, Sept. 23

21. ILLINOIS (2-0) beat San Diego State, 49-13. Illini running backs Antoineo Harris (117) and Rocky Harvey (124) each surpass 100-yard mark for the second consecutive game.

22. TEXAS CHRISTIAN (1-0) beat Nevada, 41-10. Ladainian Tomlinson had 176 yards rushing in the season opener, but it was the Horned Frog defense that made its mark with 12 first-half sacks. Next: Northwestern, Saturday

23. NOTRE DAME (1-1) lost to Nebraska, 27-24 (OT). Irish Coach Bob Davie faces the same questions Ara Parseghian did 34 years ago when he elects to run out the clock with the game tied in regulation. Next: No. 14 Purdue, Saturday

24. MICHIGAN STATE (1-0) beat Marshall, 34-24. T.J. Duckett, the Spartans’ “slimmed-down” 252-pound tailback, rushes for 219 yards. If he keeps this up, he’ll become a favorite of a certain Times columnist. Next: at Missouri, Saturday
