Georgia, Miami Tumble After Losses

Georgia and Miami became the latest teams to tumble in the top 25.

The Bulldogs, after a surprising 21-10 loss at South Carolina, plummeted 14 spots to No. 23, while the Hurricanes--34-29 losers at Washington--dropped eight places to No. 12 in the Associated Press top 25 college football poll.

Nebraska and Florida State remained 1-2 in Sunday’s poll despite close calls. The Cornhuskers beat Notre Dame, 27-24, in overtime, while the Seminoles defeated Georgia Tech, 26-21.

Even with a loss, the Fighting Irish improved two positions to No. 21 after balloting by the 71 sports writers and broadcasters on the AP panel.

Nebraska collected 41 first-place votes and 1,740 points, with Florida State receiving 26 first-place votes and 1,720 points.

Michigan remained No. 3, with Wisconsin and Texas each moving up a spot to Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.

In the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, the top five were: Nebraska, Florida State, Michigan, Florida and Wisconsin.

Portland State made sure Hawaii didn’t get any ideas about cracking the Top 25.

The Division I-AA Vikings did it in a big way too, knocking off the Warriors, 45-20, Saturday night in Honolulu with the defense getting things started and Jim Blanchard and Charles Dunn finishing the job.

It was Hawaii’s first loss to a Division I-AA team since 1976.

Portland State’s defense triggered a comeback from an early 10-0 deficit by returning two interceptions for touchdowns.
