New West Symphony received a $25,000 grant from the California Department of Education for the support of music education in Ventura County schools.
The award will fund the Symphonic Adventures program, which organizes concerts for children and sends ensemble musicians into the schools to talk about music. The program also features a music van that travels to schools and offers children an opportunity to play and learn about instruments.
“With these funds, Symphonic Adventures can offer more children an opportunity to experience instrumental music in a hands-on, creative way,” said Lynn Decker-Mahin, education coordinator for the symphony.
New West Symphony, now in its sixth season, performs regularly at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza and the Oxnard Performing Arts Center.
