The City Council on Tuesday approved a 5.5% salary increase for police officers, making them the sixth-highest paid in the county, city spokeswoman Tami K. Piscotty said. The department had fallen to the 13th spot in the county during the last year.
Police salaries in Irvine, Newport Beach, Westminster, Santa Ana and Orange top those in La Palma.
“The union contract provides that La Palma officers never fall below the sixth-highest paid in the county,” Piscotty said. “So the 5.5% increase will bring them back up there.”
The jump in salaries, she said, is primarily because of staffing demands countywide.
