VILLA PARK

The Villa Park Elementary School Restoration Corp. went before the Orange Unified School Board on Wednesday to request the district’s commitment to restoring a historical school building.
The restoration corporation is asking to lease from the district a 1920s-era building at Villa Park Elementary, which is now unused. The corporation hopes to preserve the building by remodeling it into a modern science wing.
For the last 18 months, the corporation has lobbied the district to turn over the building. The nonprofit, private corporation has raised $15,000 in cash so far, and officials said future fund-raising efforts hinge on the district’s agreement to rent out the building.
Once the district gives the OK, “We have people standing ready to write major checks,” said corporation president Teri Elmendorf.
