Expert to Discuss Public Art Projects

Local artists interested in competing for the city’s next temporary public art project--a commission worth $2,500--are encouraged to attend an upcoming lecture.
The speaker for Thursday’s lecture, “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow,” will be Eloise Damrosch, director of the public art program in Portland, Ore. She was invited to speak by the Ventura Public Art Program.
Kerry Adams, Ventura’s public art director, said Damrosch is considered a national public art expert. She will talk about temporary public art projects that have been displayed across the country.
Ventura commissions three temporary public art projects each year for display at the city’s ArtWalk events in April, July and October, Adams said. A UC Santa Barbara professor and artist was chosen to create the piece for next month’s event, Adams said, but ideas for April’s event will be considered.
The city’s public art program was established in 1991 and has been publicly funded each year with 2% of the city’s capital improvement budget.
