Phone Service to 9,000 Out Because of Cut Cable

About 9,000 Long Beach residents have lost their Verizon telephone service because a worker installing a traffic signal Wednesday afternoon accidentally cut a fiber optic cable. The outage could last 12 to 36 hours.
Police will provide extra patrols in the area, authorities said.
“Cell phones will certainly help out,” said Long Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Rick Pillsbury. “But for some, this could be a problem.”
By early this morning, some people will be able to use their phones, he said, and full service should be restored by Friday.
The outage area is bounded by Redondo Avenue on the east, Cherry Avenue on the west, Anaheim Street to the north and Seventh Street to the south.
Residents lost phone service at 3:30 Wednesday when a worker accidentally cut the cable, Pillsbury said.
