Quarantine Declared to Stop Fruit Flies

Commercial and residential growers within a 59-square-mile area of Ontario, Chino and Upland were declared under quarantine Tuesday morning as agriculture officials try to stamp out an Oriental fruit fly infestation.
Under the quarantine, fresh fruits and vegetables are forbidden to cross the boundary for 30 days while growers treat their crops. After that, commercial growers will be allowed to sell, but must continue treatments throughout the harvest. Backyard growers are discouraged from giving home-grown foods to friends and family during the ban.
Agriculture officials are trying to stop the spread of the pest by disrupting its reproductive cycle.
